The Sanctuary Lodges & Camps' mission is to establish a collection of unique
wilderness properties in areas of outstanding natural beauty, and to develop
these properties with an acute sensitivity for the areas' environment, animal
habitats, people and culture. Working closely with African specialist Tour Operators, both internationally and
locally, Sanctuary Lodges & Camps strive to create unique and fulfilling
travel experiences for our guests, with superb service and expert local guides. In our ongoing effort to set the global benchmark for sustainable tourism
operation, we use local materials, skills and crafts to create our properties,
conforming to the local architectural and cultural standards.
WILDERNESS LOCATIONS
Conceived with the discerning adventure traveler in mind, Sanctuary Lodges and Camps are unique wilderness properties in areas of outstanding natural beauty that have been designed to operate on an environmentally sustainable basis.
UNIQUE IDENTITIES
No two of these refined, stylish and idiosyncratic places are alike. But they share a common inspiration: a desire to welcome guests to the sights, sounds, flavors and experiences that are the heart and soul of Africa. Be it luxurious, thatched cottages with modern freestanding baths and private gardens or modern canvas tents raised on pavilions overlooking the Okavango Delta floods—each of our properties has a uniqueness of its own.
SMALL AND PRIVATE
Our lodges are limited to a maximum of fifteen cottages or tents as part of our commitment to low impact, high-quality tourism. Rooms are designed for the ultimate in privacy and comfort with en suite facilities.
PERSONAL SERVICE
A staff to traveler ratio of 2:1 allows us to maintain extremely high levels of efficient, unobtrusive, personal service. Our lodges do not have rigid, set schedules that guests follow for activities. Your stay is customized according to your desires and the movements of the African animals.
PROFESSIONAL GUIDES
We know that the guide is the single most important element of a safari and our guides are amongst the best in the world. We use experienced, English-speaking guides whose education, field experience and personal accomplishments make them ideal interpreters and companions. All have an intimate knowledge of local flora and fauna, geography and animal behavior.
SUPERIOR VEHICLES
Custom-built four wheel drive land cruisers offer more space and comfort and better sightlines. These are fully-equipped with radios, bottled water, field guides, binoculars and other amenities for comfort and safety.
EXCLUSIVE ACTIVITIES
Due to the privacy of our locations and the small number of guests in each lodge, we have the flexibility to offer a wide range of activities. Game viewing possibilities may include picturesque bush breakfasts, picnic lunches or "sundowner" cocktails. In many areas, private concessions afford guests the rare opportunity for exclusive night game drives and intimate walking encounters. At Stanley's Camp and Baines' Camp you can spend the morning walking with a herd of semi-habituated elephants, learning about their daily habits, from the foods they eat to their favorite bathing spots—a non-intrusive glimpse into the life of these grand beasts is an unforgettable experience offered exclusively to our guests.
ECO-INITIATIVES
All the properties are developed with exceptional sensitivity to the surrounding environment and great care is taken to ensure that the presence of the camps is not intrusive.
- Wastewater is never disposed of, but treated to the environmental needs of each area.
- Boreholes have safety switches to prevent over utilization of the resource.
- As the camps are situated in environmentally sensitive areas, all solid waste is sorted and removed from the site. Scavenger proof cages are used for temporary waste storage.
- All cleaning products and chemicals are bio-degradable.
- Camps run off power generators if not situated on an electrical grid. Emissions and fuel usage are greatly decreased.
- 24-hour power is ensured by an invertor system that takes over the supply of power when generators are not running.
- As all generators are silent packed and run to set schedules, noise pollution is kept to a minimum and the natural sounds of the surrounding environment are not disturbed.
- Environmental monitoring is an ongoing process.
- The architecture incorporates the natural environment. The wood used is from commercially grown forests and the entire structures can be removed without leaving a trade of inhabitation.
- CFC - free refrigeration is used at all camps.
